New Year-Full of Possibilities

This time of year causes us to reflect on the past and look to the future with hope of new possibilities and I have embraced that challenge.  After 21 years as a Child Life Specialist in the cancer and blood disorders program, I will be embarking on a new opportunity at Children’s –St. Paul, serving patients in the hospital battling chronic illnesses, diabetes and recovering from surgeries. This opportunity will allow me to be a part of an exciting expansion, while lending my expertise to help more children get through their journey with the healing arts and other projects.

It has been a realized dream fulfilled to have been able to work in the cancer and blood disorders clinic. I remember the moment I first stepped into a cancer and blood disorder clinic waiting room (of course there was art projects and painting going on…) in Canada during my college internship; and I knew, that was the path I wanted to take.

Thank you for helping me to fulfill my dream, sharing your medical journeys and much more. I am a better person because of all of you. I have been so privileged and I will be forever grateful. I am excited to announce Samantha Schackman as your new Child life Specialist in clinic.  She will be a wonderful asset to all of you. Take care and keep doing good work.

Truly,
Vicki “Wikki Stix” Neis

Happy Holidays

A note from Dr. Sencer

We hope all of our patients and their families are having a happy and HEALTHY holiday season so far, and that 2013 brings peace to our community and world.  The past year has been filled with many heartfelt successes--end of therapy parties, old patients heading off to college, getting married, even having babies!  And, sadly, losses of beloved patients, family members and staff.  We look forward to partnering with you all to make our futures full of health and happiness.
As the end of the year rolls around, many people contribute to those causes which are meaningful to them.  I get asked frequently about which of the many wonderful foundations they should consider giving to.  Here at CBD, we have our own fund within the Children's Hospitals and Clinics Foundation, the Cancer Kids Fund. These monies help kids and their families throughout their cancer or blood disorders journey and enable us to provide the state-of-the-art care and comforts that children with these conditions need. This past year alone, the CKF has helped fund school visits by the child life staff, end of therapy parties, neurocognitive testing for sickle cell patients, parking passes, and the tokens for the end of appointment treats.  It has also allowed Dr. Rawwas to do a study on liver tumors in children and sent nurses to important conferences which will help them to deliver better care to your child.  Having a child with a life-threatening illness is very costly, both emotionally and financially, and the CKF helps families with emergency needs of all kinds.  The list goes on and on........and my head reels when I think of how the CKF affects almost everything we do within our program.  The Cancer Kids Fund does receive money from hospital functions such as the Star Gala, but more importantly from the families and friends of our patients, in the form of tributes, memorials and contributions.  So please, as this year draws to a close, consider giving to the Cancer Kids Fund.
